Teaching Dinosaur Names to Kids: Fun and Easy Methods
You got a Corgi because they are adorable, smart, and full of personality. What nobody told you is that "smart" and "easy to train" are not the same thing.

Corgis are one of the most intelligent dog breeds in the world. They are also one of the most stubborn. And if you do not understand why — training one feels like an impossible battle of wills.
The good news: once you understand how a Corgi thinks, everything changes.
WHY CORGIS ARE DIFFERENT
Corgis were originally bred as herding dogs. For hundreds of years, their job was to make independent decisions — to move cattle and sheep without waiting for human instructions. That instinct is still hardwired into every Corgi alive today.
What does that mean for training?
It means your Corgi is not ignoring you because they are dumb. They are ignoring you because their brain is wired to think for itself. They are constantly evaluating whether your command makes sense to them — and if it does not, they will simply do something else.
Generic training advice does not work for Corgis. Here is what does.
THE 5 REASONS CORGI TRAINING FAILS
1. Treating them like any other dog
What works for a Labrador will not work for a Corgi. Labradors are people-pleasers by nature. Corgis are problem-solvers. They need to understand the purpose of a command before they will follow it consistently.
2. Long, repetitive sessions
Corgis get bored fast. A 30-minute training session is not impressive to a Corgi — it is torture. Five minutes of focused, varied training beats thirty minutes of repetition every single time.
3. Inconsistency
Corgis are incredibly observant. They notice every inconsistency in your rules. If you let them on the sofa once, they will test that boundary forever. Consistency is not optional with this breed — it is everything.
4. Weak motivation
Not all Corgis are food motivated. Some respond better to play, praise, or a favorite toy. Find what drives your specific Corgi and use that as your reward. The wrong reward is no reward at all.
5. Skipping mental stimulation
A bored Corgi is a destructive Corgi. They need mental challenges as much as physical exercise. Training is not just about obedience — it is one of the best ways to tire out a Corgi's busy brain.
THE CORGI TRAINING METHOD THAT ACTUALLY WORKS
Step 1 — Keep sessions short and sharp
Five to ten minutes maximum, two to three times per day. End every session on a success — even if you have to make the last command easy. Corgis remember how sessions end.
Step 2 — Make it a game
Corgis respond to challenge and novelty. Change up the order of commands. Add new elements. Make training feel like a puzzle they get to solve. The moment it feels routine, you will lose them.
Step 3 — Be the most interesting thing in the room
Corgis are easily distracted by their environment. You need to be more interesting than the squirrel, the smell, and the neighbor's dog. High-value treats, enthusiastic praise, and energy go a long way.
Step 4 — Never repeat a command
Say "sit" once. If they do not respond, do not say it again. Wait, re-engage, and try again. Repeating commands teaches your Corgi that the first command is optional. One command, one response.
Step 5 — Track everything
Corgis make progress in patterns. Some days they nail every command. Other days they seem to forget everything they know. When you track your sessions — what you practiced, what worked, what did not — you start to see those patterns and adjust your training accordingly.
THE 90-DAY CORGI TRANSFORMATION
The Corgis that end up calm, obedient, and joyful are not the ones with the most talented owners. They are the ones whose owners stayed consistent for 90 days.
Ninety days of short, structured, daily sessions. Ninety days of tracking progress and adjusting the approach. Ninety days of showing up — even on the days your Corgi seems determined to test every limit you have set.
That is the formula. It is not complicated. But it requires a system.
